MIDCO: A Contractor Case Study

Overview

MIDCO, a mechanical insulation contractor based in Waltham, MA, was founded 2001 by company president John Barker, utilizing his extensive background and training in mechanical estimating and design, piping and HVAC sheet metal installation. Mr. Barker is currently a member of the American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers, Inc (ASHRAE) and the National Insulation Association (NIA). As a mechanical contractor, MIDCO's engineering team uses the highest quality materials to design insulation systems for a wide range of commercial, industrial, and facility projects. MIDCO also designs and fabricates their own removable insulation pads.

In 2014, when faced with a large-scale hospital project whose scope included over 100 removable insulation jackets, Mr. Barker reached out directly through the Thermaxx website for assistance. Since that time Thermaxx and MIDCO have found a natural partnership through their work, completing close to 200 projects together over the past eight years. This joint venture has led to growth in both businesses through a synergistic partnership, leveraging each company’s own areas of expertise. MIDCO takes the lead on project management, ensuring each project is completed on time and in a cost-effective manner, while Thermaxx handles utility incentives, large-scale production of removable insulation, and asset management using Slate tags & portals. For MIDCO, it has created an entirely new revenue stream and brought in new customers, allowing them to take on more projects, purchase more materials, and hire more employees.

Even today, MIDCO continues to make their own pads for projects. However, when they need a large number of jackets, they always partner with Thermaxx. MIDCO has also been able to increase the accuracy of their estimates by using Thermaxx’s technology and proprietary app, even when a project they are bidding doesn’t include any removable insulation. MIDCO plans continue to work closely with Thermaxx in the future as their partnership provides new leads, capacity to produce large numbers of jackets, access to technology, high quality, utility incentive expertise, and Slate tags & portals
