Insulation Case Study: Crosby Building | 516 O’Farrell Street, San Francisco CA
This case study was written by Rose Titcomb of Thermaxx Jackets
The Crosby Building, located in the heart of San Francisco’s Tenderloin, is a low income multi–family building master leased and managed by Episcopal Community Services (ECS). ECS is San Francisco's largest, most comprehensive provider of services and supportive housing and a leader in San Francisco's plan to create more supportive housing for homeless individuals and families. Maggie Holmes, in charge of master leased operations for ECS, along with Devon Berry, Energy Efficiency Specialist of the San Francisco Department of the Environment, reached out to Thermaxx and Lovelight Solutions to help make the building more energy efficient.
Devon’s determination in getting ECS the funding they needed to make the Crosby building energy efficient was a multi-measure task. A mishmash of existing fixtures were replaced by Lovelight Solutions with good looking, long-lasting, and highly efficient LED ceiling fixtures and sconces. The fixtures are rated to last 50,000 hours, or 16.7 years at average residential usage. The project will save The Crosby over $20,000 over the operating life of the fixture. Residents were thrilled to receive the upgrade to their living space.
Thermaxx conducted the heat loss survey & calculated the potential savings that could be obtained by insulating the mechanical room. Thermaxx found that touch temperatures of uninsulated pipes, unions, safety valve & boiler were over 227°F which created an ambient temperature of over 90°F. D2 was then brought in to provide the hard insulation on the piping as well as installing the Thermaxx jackets bringing the touch temp down to under 120F resulting in not only savings for the entire building, but a more comfortable temperature throughout.
