Building Pipe Insulation Saves Nearly $1,000 Per Floor

New York City Building Cuts Energy Bills by $18,5000 Per Year with Removable Insulation Jackets

July 17, 2012 – New York City, NY – Interchurch Center is a 19-story building located on the Upper West Side. Although insulated during construction, the insulation had been removed and damaged as a result of day-to-day activities, which is typical for an office building with steam.

Standard insulation installed during construction is often removed and not replaced on piping components that require routine maintenance. Removable Insulation Jackets are designed to insulate those components and allow maintenance personnel to quickly remove and replace the insulation to facilitate general maintenance. In addition to keeping the workplace safe, insulation jackets also keep heat where it belongs: in the pipe. In addition to heat loss, the work environment ambient temperatures at Interchurch Center were uncomfortable, approaching 85 degrees Fahrenheit in the mechanical room.

Thermaxx entered into a contract in May 2012 to provide Removable Insulation Jackets and Removable Insulation Covers. The company completed an energy survey and worked with the building managers to prepare a scope of work that included replacing missing pipe insulation and installing removable jackets on components, such as steam traps, gate valves, steam traps, condensate pumps, wye strainers, heat exchangers and pressure reducing valves. Insulation reduced the temperature in the mechanical room substantially.

“The facility managers at the Interchurch were extremely forward-thinking when it came to energy savings,” said Brian Bannon, owner of Thermaxx. “Once the energy savings were calculated, it was not a matter of if the project would get done, but how soon. Thermaxx was given full access to the facility and there was someone available 24hours a day from building management to assist with the measuring and installation. I cannot remember working with a more friendly, dedicated and knowledgeable group.”

Interchurch Center houses offices and agencies of various religions and of ecumenical and inter-religious organizations. A Con Edison rebate of $21,000 covered a significant portion of the project costs, which were $34,500 in total.
